But Deen has now shed 36 pounds & she tells Woman’s Day the key is “moderation” in her diet.

“I just needed to learn to eat a normal portion size & not overindulge,” the star tells the magazine.

Her life goals: “I want to be here for my grandchildren. I think approximately them every day. My daddy was dead at 40. My mother was dead at 44. & look – I’m 65 & I’m still here! Go, 65! Waking up every morning is very thrilling for me, to see what the day is going to bring.”

Her anti-fat-free stance: “In my refrigerator, there’s no light mayonnaise. I’d rather eat less of the real thing & have it taste really satisfactory than have diet stuff that tastes dreadful.”

On pacing oneself at the table: “Putting my fork down & having a conversation has been a huge help. Because it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you’re full.”
